When two carefree black girls, Paula Akpan and Nicole Crentsil, heard Chimamanda Adichie speak at WOW festival, they were inspired by all that black girl magic and decided to bring some more into the world via Black Girl Fest.

Paula Akpan is the co-founder of I’m Tired, an online magazine which highlights the micro-aggression, prejudice and discrimination people face everyday, while Nicole Crenstil is the founder of Unmasked Women, an exhibition that aims to channel the black British female experience through art.

These two have already done bits for the culture and the much needed Black Girl Fest is just another layer of the cake. The event is free to the public and will feature performance artists, workshops and panels all with a key goal to uplift black women and fight misogynoir.

Speaking to Dazed about Black Girl Fest, Akpan said:

“This is needed because black British women are never truly celebrated for just existing in a world that places us at the bottom of the heap.

It’s so important to acknowledge the unique struggle that black women face in terms of misogynoir while living in a country where people think racism doesn’t exist.”

The day long festival will hold on October 29 from 10am until 11pm with a full programme of arts based activities for women and girls exploring what it means to be a Black woman in the UK. They have also invited a number of black girl magic enforcers such as The Slumflower, Kelechi Okafor, Aisha Ayoade and more.
