Rap Albums To Watch Out For In 2020

2019 was a very interesting year for Nigerian hip-hop. Rappers like Naira Marley and Zlatan Ibile were some of the hottest acts last year, thanks to their dominance in the street-hop scene and their hit songs as well. Another impressive rap act last year was Blaqbonez. The 100 Crowns rapper released 2 projects in 2019. Bad Boy Blaq ReUp and Mr. Boombastic. The former being the follow-up project to his 2018 Bad Boy Blaq tape while the latter was a dancehall and rap infused project in which we saw Blaq channel his alter-ego called Mr. Boombastic.

Other remarkable projects to emerge in 2019 were Clone Wars IV (Show Dem Camp), Moral Instruction (Falz), Vibes Before Teslim (Vector), Chvmeleon (Alpha Ojini), illyZilla(illbliss & Teckzilla), illosophy (illbliss), Mafia Culture Vol 1 (Idowest), Barely Big Enough(BarelyAnyHook & BigFootInYourFace), 2 Birds 1 Stone (D-Truce) amongst many others.

For 2020, we can expect rap projects from the following artistes:

100 Crowns rapper and Chocolate City artiste AQ is set to release his last album. In recent times, A-Q has quietly evolved from artiste to music executive. He runs 100 Crowns with Loose Kaynon and together they have been able to build a relatively sustainable that is dedicated to reviving Nigerian hip-hop and they have made some strides in that regard. They’ve been able to run a recurring rap event called The Coronation and they have been part of the famous Martell Cyphers.

When it comes to albums, A-Q always delivers. He has proven himself time and time again to be an incredible lyricist who is capable of putting out heavy rap records. This album which is titled God’s Engineering is expected to drop within the first quarter of 2020.

The Alaga Ibile of Nigerian hip-hop is returning with a new album this year. He confirmed it while interacting with a fan on Twitter. Reminisce has expanded his portfolio by joining Nollywood and his first acting gig was King Of Boys. His performance in that movie received a lot of praise and it has been revealed that a sequel to King Of Boys will be released later this year. This is going to be an interesting year as he will be releasing a new album and might feature in the King Of Boys sequel.

Since his last album, Reminisce has kept his fans entertained like Level Yen, Ponmile, Problem, Do You Feel It, Ajigijaga, Konsignment, Oja, Jensimi, OGB4IG and the most recent single Instagram which might just be the first single from his new album.

M.I Abaga

The Chairman will return in 2020 and it’s something everyone is looking forward to. Last year, M.I was the center of attention when the Martell Cyphers were released. His rekindled beef with Vector also put the spotlight on him. He announced that he’ll be releasing an EP called Judah but we never got it. We are expecting it this year. If we are lucky, M.I may bless up with 2 projects this year. He has also teased the return of his illegal music series.

Olamide has to release a project this year. His last album Lagos Nawa was released in 2017 and since then, Olamide has released a couple of singles to keep his fans entertained. Olamide hasn’t confirmed in any way that he will release a project this year but it seems impossible for him to go without releasing a project this year.

DMW rapper has a lot to offer this year. On the 3rd of January, he tweeted that he would be releasing an EP and an album this year. Along with this message, he posted the hashtag #CNV2 to indicate that he will be releasing a follow-up project to his 2018 tape Codename Vol. 1. He has also teased that there’s a song with all the DMW rappers (himself, Sinzu, Idowest and Lil Frosh) on CNV2.

Naira Marley & Zlatan Ibile

A lot of people were left confused when Zlatan revealed the tracklist for his debut album Zanku To The World and Naira Marley was nowhere to be found on it. He would later explain that he didn’t include Naira Marley on the album because they have been working on a joint album that will be released in 2020. Details about the album have been kept under wraps so for one, no one really knows when to expect the project.
